Volunteers:

In total, the project engaged 52 volunteers - 35 through courses and 17 who joined the RLN SW Language and Culture Volunteer Register as a result of project publicity. (Further applications have been received since the project finished).

The profile of the volunteers was:

Pie chart showing the profile of volunteers engaged

  • 24% employed

  • 20% Retired

  • 18% Further / Higher Education students

  • 16% Teachers / trainers

  • 14% School students

  • 8% Not employed

(We would recommend including employed people in this group, in particular native speakers and migrant workers.)

35 volunteers engaged with the project through the courses offered.  As at 31 July 2007, a further 17 joined the RLN SW volunteer network because of project or RLN SW publicity.  We continue to receive enquiries.

Working with Go-Skills brought in taxi drivers and bus drivers.

Apprentice chefs were enthused to learn about a new cuisine and the Imam from the mosque in Bournemouth was delighted to hear about the interest in Islamic culture and asked how he could help.

Only a very small number of unemployed people were involved. Due to the limited time we were unable to recruit relevant people or build the links needed to then help them into training or employment.
