Teenagers try life in another language in new T4 series
14 August 2008
In a new Saturday morning TV series on T4, twelve young people use their language skills to compete for the ultimate work experience in the music industry: the job of a ‘fixer’ on a successful band’s European Tour.
The DCSF-sponsored TV series, Je suis un rockstar, follows the three chosen candidates as they join a successful Indie band – The Wombats – on tour through Europe. Each of the young people will use their language skills to make sure everything runs smoothly in one European city on the tour itinerary. Tasks include organising travel arrangements, drawing up guest lists and liaising with the local media.
Devised as four 30-minute programmes, Je suis un rockstar aims to inspire young people with a love of languages by showing some of the exciting opportunities which language skills can offer. The show will air on Saturday 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th August, with the first episode being shown on 9 August at 9.25am on T4, the teen strand of Channel 4.
Kate Board, Chief Executive of CILT, the National Centre for Languages, said:
‘Many young people find the thought of mastering a language fluently daunting but this new series proves that even just a few words can make all the difference. We are delighted to see a T4 programme demonstrating the real-life benefits of languages to viewers. Hopefully this show will promote a long-lasting appetite for languages among young people and enhance a greater motivation for language skills.’
The series is supported by an online hub containing footage from the T4 programme and clips from the Live Life in Another Language advertising campaign. The website also offers articles and information about European music festivals, foreign fashion, sport and dance from a range of countries including Spain, France and Germany: www.trylifeinanotherlanguage.com.
