Glenn Jones, Managing Director of Conway Stewart, speaking to pupils about the importance of learning foreign languages
For the European Day of Languages on 26th September 2007, Managing Director Glenn Jones kindly agreed to give a talk at the University of Plymouth Business School on the importance of languages for international trade, attended both by students and by visiting pupils and teachers from local schools.
Glenn described from a personal perspective how despite his unsuccessful experience of learning languages at school, he realised when posted abroad - including in West and Central Africa - how important it was to master other languages. He spoke passionately about the importance of ensuring that trained linguists enter business, to maintain and develop our global trade links in an increasingly competitive world.
His comparisons between our exports to English-speaking and non-English speaking regions of the world spoke volumes. Glenn’s talk was extremely well received by his audience, including school pupils who reported changing their minds about the importance of languages after hearing his message.
