Essential to inspire pupils

Paul Tyler, Director of Cooknell Optronics, explained why the company wanted to get involved in the pilot scheme: "I am concerned that it appears, certainly within this (Weymouth) area that languages are no longer a compulsory subject. I believe that this is a retrograde step and will put the UK at a disadvantage in the future. I feel that the advantage of language learning should be made more obvious to students and that involvement with commerce may help with this." Paul was also keen to meet staff from other businesses, and have the chance to work with young people who may have different ideas regarding foreign publicity and have no preconceived ideas.

Simon Lewis from the College said that although the department has always been very positive, involvement in the BLC project has persuaded them to think more laterally. "The fantastic high profile title of the pilot has helped, along with the promotional material linking MFL to the real world."

A mini marketing project involving the production of a promotional pamphlet by the 6th form German and French students is planned for next term, along with the creation of a foreign language version of their website with the key stage 4 Modern Foreign Language Students.

The College feel sure that the project will, "help emphasise the importance and advantages of using a foreign language." Despite the activities not having started yet the two parties have already forged very positive links and this looks set to develop into a longer term relationship than the initial pilot period.
