Calder Originals showcases
to the world

Inspired by a life long interest in good design and fine luggage coupled with a developing love of guitars, Nick Comer-Calder founded Calder Originals in 2003 to make hand crafted carrying cases for treasured musical instruments and laptops for customers from all over the world.

Calder laptop casesThe quality hall marks of a Calder Original case are great strength, low weight and handsome appearance, ideally suited for violins, classical and electric guitars and laptop computers. Each case features an organic leather exterior, a robust carbon fibre shell, silk velvet lining and an impact protection suspension system built to withstand maximum shock. The laptop case is uniquely lined in calf rather than silk velvet.

Locally appointed craftsmen can take up to 35 hours to skilfully build and fit out a quality Calder Original. The luxury product range of carrying cases offers smart design and reflects individual care and attention fitting for the fine instruments they carry.

In 2006, advice was sought from the Regional Language Network South West concerning company plans to target overseas markets of Japan, USA, Italy, Germany, France and Russia. With the company website in development, Nick Comer- Calder wished to translate this and other marketing materials into multi- languages in pursuit of export sales. As a participant in the Passport to Export Scheme, Nick accessed funding to cover half of the translation costs.

It was essential that any translations should show the passion and commitment of the original English text. RLN SW recommended local freelance translators so that Nick could establish direct personal contact and build a working relationship with them. By late summer 2007, the multilingual pages of www.calderoriginals.com were launched in Japanese, German, Italian, French and Russian.

“The Regional Language Network offers a fantastic service and fast, professional response,” says Nick Comer- Calder. “The advice we received was invaluable, making it easy to contact appropriate local translator providers with whom I have enjoyed working. I have been very pleased with the sympathetic translations carried out and also the cultural advice given.

“Since then, there has been media interest from around the world particularly Japan and the Middle East with several stories on Calder Originals being published. A recent customer is Russian and although we converse in English, the website editorial in Russian probably drew him to us.

“Our best selling product is currently the unique design of the Calder Original laptop case and I am confident that there will more business coming from overseas in the future as a result of the website translations.”

Gwyneth Leonard, RLN SW manager said: “A luxury, hand crafted quality product such as Nick Comer – Calder’s range of bespoke carrying cases made in the UK has real export potential. By improving the company’s international communications through web site multilingual translations and search engine optimisation through an online blog diary, Calder Originals offers an informative and language sound showcase to the world.”
