Paradise Park
Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary, based in Hayle in Cornwall, incorporates the World Parrot Trust and is the country’s leading centre for the promotion of parrot welfare both in the wild and
captivity. The Park is the base for the World Parrot Trust, a
world-wide charity raising funds and awareness.
In order to send out the conservation knowledge and expertise that they have, the company uses foreign language translations to communicate the information. They find that using the language of the country they are trading with makes sure the information is delivered clearly and without any misunderstandings. Their overseas colleagues are therefore able to use the information supplied with immediate effect.
David Woolcock from the Wildlife Sanctuary explains that, ‘International communication enables the efficient and effective transfers of endangered species across the globe as part of coordinated International Conservation Breeding Programmes. If we do not use the native language of the target country the technical / scientific nature of our work is easily misunderstood or misinterpreted and the information would be of no use to its recipients. We use native speakers in many of the countries in which we work, who help us translate the materials.
‘By taking part in the Business Language Champions project we hope to spread the message to the region’s children that languages are an essential tool for today’s businesses, whatever sector you work in. For us having a multilingual approach in our field makes global conservation far more effective.
'As a Business Language Champion we hope to encourage the development of language skills amongst our employees and the production of multilingual literature for use within the zoological collection, thereby benefiting our overseas visitors.’
