Portland Port
As the second largest man made harbour in the world, Portland Port
has seen a large increase in cruise calls in recent years.
To cater for the increased demand – 8 visits are expected in 2008 - the company has developed a dedicated cruise passenger terminal and port facilities that appeal to both passengers and cruise operators.
Portland is keen to attract German cruise liners as Northern Europe is now the world’s third biggest cruise destination after the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.
As a member of the Destination South West, an alliance of 10 ports throughout the Southwest of England, Portland Port recognises the need to understand the culture of German cruise visitors and welcome them in their own language.
With the Regional Language Network South West’s help, the company has sourced Blue Badge tour guides and translated its Port services guide into German. John Healy, Portland Port’s general manager, business development, visited Bremen in April and met with a large cruise company that was most impressed with the new translated brochure.
John Healy said: “Our recent marketing visit to Germany confirms the need to offer German speaking guides and service personnel who understand cultural differences as well as an ability to answer direct questions.”
John also supported a recent, RLN SW organised German on Tour training day with Weymouth College that brought together volunteer German speakers and those engaged at the forefront of welcoming cruise ship passengers.
Philada Rogers, RLN SW’s Dorset & Wiltshire business adviser cites Portland Port as a go ahead company in its approach to language and cultural issues. She said:
“With Portland Port’s involvement, the German on Tour event and Jurassic Coast tour has resulted in the setting up of a German special interest group to promote German language and culture. This group can support local businesses which may require German speakers and need to develop their understanding of the German market and expectations.”
